Waste Knot Energy Plant

Founded in 2019, WKE was set up to enable large-scale energy users to significantly cut their energy costs while reducing carbon emissions and tackling the enormous amount of waste that ends up in landfill. In 2022 we began commissioning of the UK’s largest waste pelletising plant, designed to deliver 250k tons per year.
The project commenced on site in 2020 and was energised in 2021.
Scope of Work
To energise this scheme, Alconex has secured a substantial load of 6 MVA from NPG, Distribution Network Operator. As a fully accredited Independent Connection Provider (ICP), we have handled the entire design, installation and commissioning for the connection, with the site subsequently adopted and maintained by the trusted Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO), ESPE. We were also instructed to bring a 10,000 kWh MP gas connection to the site.
An offsite route over 6.5km for 2 x 11kV HV cables was required to secure the load for the plant. Alconex carried out all the offsite excavation and reinstatement works, coordination of traffic management and obtaining S50 Licences.
An NPG Intake Switch Substation was installed adjacent to a new 11kV IDNO substation. Alconex was responsible for the commissioning of both substations in conjunction with NPG.
